A significant chapter in West Indies cricket has officially come to a close. Head coach Daren Sammy has confirmed that former captain and key all-rounder Jason Holder has retired from One Day International (ODI) cricket. Jason Holder veteran remains fully committed to Test cricket and franchise leagues, his retirement marks the end of a ten-year journey in the 50-over format.

Holder was entrusted with the major responsibility of captaining the West Indies ODI team at the age of just 23, making him the youngest captain in the team’s history. Amidst the turbulent phases of Caribbean cricket, he stood firm as a reliable seam-bowling all-rounder and a calm, composed leader during a period of transition.

Speaking on the Wisden Cricket Podcast, West Indies head coach Daren Sammy revealed that Jason Holder has quietly retired from ODI cricket. While sharing the news of his retirement, the West Indies head coach also stated that the all-rounder remains a contender for a spot in the Test team.

Jason Holder is still a contender for Test cricket. I know he has retired from ODI cricket. He will certainly retire from Test cricket as well at some point. He has spoken about his choices, and obviously, he is a key all-rounder for us.

Jason Holder Odi Cricket Career

Over the course of his ODI career, Holder played 138 matches for the West Indies in this format, scoring 2,237 runs (including 12 half-centuries) and taking 159 wickets. He made his ODI debut in 2013 and played a key role in the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups.

Following the West Indies’ failure to qualify for the 2023 World Cup in India, the all-rounder played a significant part in the World Cup Qualifiers, scoring 144 runs and claiming six wickets. Ultimately, this match proved to be the Barbados-born player’s last in the format.
