Indian Batsmen Who Have Scored an Innings of 300 Runs in a Test Match

Scoring a century in Test cricket is considered one of the greatest achievements for any batsman. Reaching the 200-run mark is even more special, while crossing the 300-run mark in a Test innings places a batsman in a very exclusive club. For India, only two batsmen have achieved this magnificent feat in men’s Test cricket: Virender Sehwag and Karun Nair.

Virender Sehwag was the first Indian batsman to score a Test triple century; he scored 309 runs against Pakistan in Multan in 2004. Four years later, he went a step further by scoring 319 runs against South Africa in Chennai—the highest individual score by an Indian batsman in Test cricket. Subsequently, Karun Nair became the second Indian to reach this milestone when he scored an unbeaten 303 against England in Chennai in 2016.

1. Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag’s score of 319 runs against South Africa remains the highest individual score ever recorded by an Indian batsman in a Test match. This innings was played in March 2008 at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Sehwag displayed tremendous aggression against South Africa’s formidable bowling attack, scoring 319 runs off 304 balls. His innings included 42 fours and five sixes, reflecting the aggressive style that established him as one of the most dangerous opening batsmen in Test cricket.

2. Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag made history by becoming the first Indian batsman to score a triple century in Test cricket. Playing against Pakistan in Multan in March 2004, Sehwag played one of the most memorable innings in the history of Indian Test cricket. He scored 309 runs off 375 balls; the innings included 39 fours and six sixes. Sehwag reached the 300-run mark on March 29, 2004, becoming the first Indian to achieve this feat. This magnificent performance earned him the nickname “Sultan of Multan.”

At the time, the record for the highest individual score by an Indian in a Test match was held by VVS Laxman, who had scored 281 runs against Australia in Kolkata in 2001. Sehwag surpassed that record by a significant margin in Multan. This innings was also crucial from the team’s perspective; India dominated Pakistan and won the Test match by an innings and 52 runs.

3. Karun Nair

In December 2016, Karun Nair scored an unbeaten 303 runs against England in Chennai. Nair became the second Indian batsman to score 300 or more runs in a Test innings. This achievement was particularly special as it was only the third Test match of his career. He converted his maiden Test century into a triple century, becoming the first Indian batsman to do so.

He reached the 300-run mark by hitting a boundary off Adil Rashid’s bowling. Shortly thereafter, India declared their innings at 759/7, with Nair remaining unbeaten on 303. Thanks to this innings, India secured a massive lead and ultimately won the Test match by an innings and 75 runs.
