Why Did Punjab Kings Release Glenn Maxwell for IPL 2026?

Punjab Kings (PBKS) has made a major decision ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, releasing Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell from the team. Following this surprising decision, head coach Ricky Ponting has openly explained the reasons behind the move.

PBKS releases six players, including Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell was among the six players released by PBKS. This decision is noteworthy because Maxwell has always been one of the most explosive and sought-after players in T20 cricket. However, his return with PBKS in the 2025 season did not live up to expectations.

Speaking to Star Sports, Ponting made it clear that the team has great affection for Maxwell and appreciates the passion and creativity he brings to his game. However, last season, the team management felt that Maxwell wasn’t fulfilling his potential.

“We realized he wouldn’t be able to be part of our starting XI, so we decided to release him.” – Ricky Ponting

This statement makes it clear that the primary reason for Maxwell’s ouster wasn’t poor form, but rather the realization that he wasn’t able to secure a place in the starting eleven.

Regarding Maxwell’s performance in the 2025 season, it was extremely disappointing. He scored just 48 runs in six innings, and his strike rate dropped to 97.95. Although these figures included a 30-run innings, overall he failed to live up to the team’s expectations.

PBKS re-signed him for ₹4.2 crore in the mega auction. Ponting admitted that the team didn’t reap the benefits of this significant investment.

“We didn’t get the best out of him last year.”
