Gill’s participation in the 2nd Test is doubtful, Will Pant take over the captaincy?

Gill’s participation in the 2nd Test is doubtful, Will Pant take over the captaincy?: Suspense remains over India captain Shubman Gill’s availability for the second Test. Gill suffered severe neck spasms during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, and has since been unable to practice in the nets. Team batting coach Sitanshu Kotak indicated that Gill will undergo a fitness test on Friday, which will determine whether he will be able to play in the second Test.

The second and final Test is scheduled to begin on Saturday.

The big question: Is it worth the risk?

According to Kotak, the medical team is waiting until the last minute, but a decision will be made very carefully. He said, “Even if he appears fine, the biggest question is whether the spasms will recur during the match. If there is even the slightest doubt, he will rest for one more match.” Gill is not only the captain but also a key pillar of the Indian batting order. Kotak acknowledged that the team will definitely feel his absence, but expressed confidence in the backup players.

Confidence in Bench Strength

Kotak stated that India has several good batsmen available, and anyone can perform well if given the opportunity. He said, “If Gill doesn’t play, we have batsmen who can play big innings for the team. Perhaps whoever comes in will even score a century.”

Dhruv Jurel batted at number 4 in the second innings of the first Test. Kotak kept this option open, but clarified that the combination would depend on Gill’s availability. He said, “We will decide on the final combination only after Shubman’s condition becomes clear.”

Gill’s absence was clearly visible in the first Test

Kotak clearly stated that Gill’s absence was a major factor in India’s defeat in the first Test. According to him, “If Gill had batted in the first innings and had a big partnership, the outcome of the match could have been different. The matter might not have reached the second innings.”

At least 10 days needed

According to sources, Gill may need about 10 days to fully recover. If he plays the second Test, he is likely to be rested for the three-match ODI series starting November 30.
